Ghana reaffirmed its leadership in sustainable energy as the International Energy Agency (IEA) opened its Africa Energy Efficiency Policy Training Week in Accra. The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, delivered the welcome and opening address, underscoring Ghana’s strong progress in advancing energy efficiency across key sectors.

Welcoming participants from across Africa and beyond on behalf of the Ministry and the Government of Ghana, Hon. Jinapor highlighted Ghana’s steady achievements driven by deliberate policy interventions and collaboration with global partners.

He outlined major national milestones, including:
    •    400 GWh of electricity saved through efficient refrigeration
    •    124 MW reduction in peak demand as a result of efficient lighting 
    •    47.9% household penetration of LPG
    •    1.6 million tonnes of firewood saved annually through the adoption of improved cookstoves

“These milestones show that targeted energy efficiency policies deliver lasting economic, environmental, and social benefits,” the Minister noted. 

He emphasized that energy efficiency remains central to Ghana’s Energy Transition Strategy, which is geared toward building a cleaner and more resilient future.

Mr. Jinapor expressed gratitude to the IEA, the African Development Bank (AfDB), and other development partners for their continued support. He stressed that strengthened collaboration is vital to enhancing the capacity of African countries to develop sustainable, people-centered energy systems.
