Hon. Gyan-Mensah Endorses Nuclear Power as Key to Ghana’s Energy Future
Accra– June 24, 2025. In a decisive step toward diversifying Ghana’s energy portfolio, the Deputy Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Hon. Richard Gyan-Mensah (MP), has stated that the development of nuclear energy is a strategic and sustainable power source for the nation.
Speaking at a Stakeholders’ Engagement on the Draft Bill to establish Ghana’s Nuclear Power Company, the Deputy Minister emphasised the government’s commitment to integrating nuclear energy into the country’s energy mix. The forum, held under the auspices of the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, brought together energy experts, policymakers, civil society actors, and international partners to deliberate on Ghana's nuclear ambitions.
“Ghana's energy demands are growing rapidly, and we must diversify our sources to ensure a stable and sustainable supply of power,” Hon. Gyan-Mensah stated. “Nuclear energy is a strategic imperative. It offers baseload power to support industrialization, low-carbon electricity to meet our climate commitments under the Paris Agreement, and ensures long-term energy security,” he said
The Deputy Minister further noted that nuclear energy presents a clean, efficient, and reliable alternative to fossil fuels, with the potential to drastically cut greenhouse gas emissions and reduce dependence on imported liquid fuels for power generation.
He also praised the progress Ghana has made under the International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA) Three-Phase Milestone Approach for new nuclear countries. “The IAEA has acknowledged Ghana’s strong commitment to nuclear development,” he said, adding that the government is determined to adopt international best practices and maintain the highest safety and regulatory standards.
Hon. Gyan-Mensah assured stakeholders and the public of government’s dedication to a transparent and inclusive process, stressing that public engagement and scientific evidence will guide the nation’s path forward. “We will continue to hold extensive public consultations to address all concerns. Our decisions will be risk-informed and guided by the best interests of the Ghanaian people,” he said.
The Draft Bill to establish the Ghana Nuclear Power Company is a crucial legislative step that would formalize the institutional framework for the country’s nuclear energy programme. The proposed company is expected to oversee the planning, construction, and operation of nuclear power plants in Ghana.
As the government moves forward with the energy transformation agenda, nuclear energy marks a significant shift in policy direction aimed at ensuring energy security, fostering industrial growth, and meeting international climate obligations
